Coronavirus: Disney’s Onward to be released early online due to pandemic
Film came out in cinemas earlier in March before venues were shut down
Disney’s Onward will be released online earlier than planned due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The company announced on Friday that the Pixar animated film will be available for purchase online in the US by the end of the day.
It will then begin streaming on Disney+ in the US on 3 April.
Onward, voiced by Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Octavia Spencer and more, came out earlier in March but its release was cut short when cinemas shut down due to the ongoing pandemic.
“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,” director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae said in a statement.
Other films have adapted their release schedule to the pandemic.
Emma, The Invisible Man and The Hunt will all be available to watch from home. Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker were also released early online.
Onward will be available for purchase from 5pm PST / 8pm EST on Friday.
