Dunkirk - Trailer

2017 has been a pretty quiet year for cinema so far - there's been a few real gems but a dirth of 'big' critically-acclaimed films, which could work in Christopher Nolan's favour.

The director's new war epic Dunkirk has been placed at 2/1 to win the Oscar for Best Picture with bookmakers William Hill.

"The initial reaction to the film has been overwhelmingly positive and there is little doubt that it will be there or thereabouts come awards season," a spokesperson said.

If not Best Picture, Nolan surely has a very good chance of landing Best Director, an award he has surprisingly never been nominated for.

Inception is his only film to be up for Best Picture, losing to The King's Speech in 2010 but equalling its award haul of four.

Check back for our review of Dunkirk tonight, with the worldwide embargo set to drop at 9pm.

The Beguiled, The Big Sick, Call Me By Your Name and Get Out could all be in with a shout for Best Picture too, though my early pick is Downsizing, a film from Nebraska director Alexander Payne starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig and centring on a couple who volunteer to have themselves shrunk in order to live off a smaller budget.
