Oscars 2019: Ruth Carter becomes first ever black winner for Best Costume Design
'Marvel may have created the first black superhero but we turned him into an African king'
Ruth Carter has become the first ever black winner of the Oscar for Best Costume Design.
The Black Panther designer began her speech by paying tribute to Spike Lee, who she worked with on School Daze.
“Thank you for my start, I hope this makes you proud,” she said, adding: “Marvel may have created the first black superhero but we turned him into an African king.”
Other films in contention for Best Costume Design included Mary Poppins Returns, Mary Queen of Scots, and The Favourite.
The 2019 Oscars saw Rami Malek take home Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Other winners included Olivia Colman for The Favourite and Alfonso Cuarón took home Best Director for his Netflix drama Roma. Green Book won Best Picture, proving a controversial choice over Roma.
