Palm Springs: Andy Samberg says potential sequel could feature ‘a WandaVision situation’

Samberg and co-star Cristin Milioti both expressed interest in doing a follow-up

Andy Samberg has discussed the prospect of a sequel to the acclaimed comedy Palm Springs, which was released in the UK earlier this week.

Palm Springs stars Samberg and Cristin Milioti as two dysfunctional wedding guests who get trapped in a Groundhog Day-style time loop.

Speaking to Radio Times in a new interview, Samberg and Milioti stated that the film’s ending had been interpreted differently by various cast members, and that the idea of a sequel had been discussed on set.

“I mean, it could go in a lot of different directions because I feel like even the way that the movie ends is slightly open-ended, depending on your interpretation,” said Samberg.

“So it could be marital bliss or it could be sort of a WandaVision situation. You’re not sure exactly where they are.”

WandaVision aired on Disney Plus earlier this year. Set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the series saw Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) enjoy married life in an eerily supernatural sitcom reality.

Milioti also told the publication: “Obviously [a sequel] would have to be the same group again. I remember us all joking about doing sort of a Before Sunrise thing with it, where you visit them three different times throughout their lives. So maybe we would do another one in 10 years and see what’s happened to them.

“But what I also love about the ending is, in my opinion, the ending is quite ambiguous. I know I have a very different idea of how it ends than Andy Samberg and from [writer] Andy Siara and [director] Max [Barbakow]; the four of us have entirely different ideas for it, which I love. So I guess we’d all have to get on the same page for a sequel.”

In a four-star review for The Independent, Clarisse Loughrey wrote that Palm Springs “offers a new way to look at a familiar format”.

The film can be watched now on Amazon Prime Video.
