Rebecca trailer: Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas come face to face at Manderley in Netflix adaptation

Ben Wheatley’s adaptation will launch on Netflix on 21 October

The trailer for Netflix’s adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca has been released.

The gothic novel, first published in 1938, has been adapted for the streaming giant with director Ben Wheatley attached. It will be released on Wednesday 21 October.

Lily James stars as a young woman who falls in love with and marries recent widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), only to find his home haunted by the memories of his late first wife, the titular Rebecca.

Kristin Scott Thomas stars as housekeeper Mrs Danvers, with Keeley Hawes and Ann Dowd also appearing.

Faced with playing such an iconic role, James last year revealed that she “kept having panic attacks” during filming, saying: “I found it really hard to let go of the character.

“She’s really bullied and gaslighted, she lives in a difficult headspace,” the actor continued. “I kept having panic attacks after it finished, I couldn’t shake it off.”

Rebecca has been adapted for the screen a number of times, the most notable being Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 version.

Starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, it was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won two, including for Best Picture.
