Sean Hughes dead: Never Mind the Buzzcocks share moving tribute to late Irish comedian

The groundbreaking Irish comedian passed away at the age of 51 on Monday (16 October)

Never Mind The Buzzcocks have shared a touching tribute to former team captain Sean Hughes who passed away yesterday (16 October) at the age of 51.

Tributes to the Irish stand-up poured in from across the world of comedy with the music quiz show publishing a compilation of some of Hughes' funniest moments.

Hughes, born in London and raised in Dublin, first performed at the Comedy Store in 1987. He went on to win the main prize at the prestigious Perrier Comedy Awards – now the Edinburgh Comedy Awards – in 1990 for A One Night Stand With Sean Hughes. At 24, Hughes was the youngest comedian ever to win the accolade.

​Buzzcocks was Hughes' most famous television stint - he appeared as a team captain between 1996 and 2002 alongside Phill Jupitus and host Mark Lamarr.

Upon the announcement of Hughes' death, Jupitus paid tribute to his fellow panellist with a photo of the duo, writing: “I keep looking at this photo. It feels like a lifetime ago. Another life even.”

Hughes had been unwell for a while, with his most recent tweet, posted on 8 October, simply reading: “In hospital.” It was reported that he was admitted to Whittington Hospital with liver cirrhosis, passing away during the night after suffering a cardiac arrest.
