The Sony executive who stepped aside after the email hacking scandal is unable to move into her new office – because of the stench of marijuana left behind by director Seth Rogen, its previous resident.

Amy Pascal stood down as co-chair of Sony Pictures after her private emails to other Hollywood figures were posted online. She is taking up a post as a Sony producer.

But her move to a new office has been delayed while the company attempts to remove the smell of cannabis from the building, which previously housed Rogen and his collaborator Evan Goldberg.

Rogen, who starred in and directed The Interview, the film about the assassination of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un that sparked the email hack, is one of America’s most famous pot smokers.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that the aroma was so strong the office will have to be redecorated and Ms Pascal would work from temporary accommodation. A source said that the smell – at times so bad it could be detected two floors above the ground-floor office – had seeped into the flooring.
