Last weekend's three-day holiday experienced record-breaking box office returns, fueled by several blockbuster movies and strong films geared for specialized audiences. The New Year's long weekend will see the same two main players, Sherlock Holmes and Avatar, up for the top spots.

Avatar, in its third week at theatres, could maintain its lead but the sci-fi epic might also slip a notch, with Sherlock Holmes building momentum and taking over the top spot.

Other films include Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel for kids and It's Complicated, targeting women. The only new film is Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon, in limited release.

With so much strong competition this holiday, moviegoers will likely continue to catch films they missed over the New Year's weekend, ending the year with a record season.
