Star Wars: Boba Fett was originally going to be the main villain in Return of the Jedi but George Lucas got bored

'When George decided not to make a third trilogy, he completely jettisoned that story line'

May the Fourth saw people around the world celebrate Star Wars, with numerous pieces of new information about the series hitting the internet.

First, Mark Hamill confirmed in an interview that The Force Awakens was meant to start with Luke’s severed hand falling from the sky. Then, JJ Abrams released his Cantina Song online, revealing it was inspired by Shaggy’s “Wasn’t Me”.

In an interview with Inverse, Lucasfilm’s first official fan relations officer Craig Miller revealed some insider knowledge about George Lucas and the filmmaking process behind the Star Wars films.

Interestingly, he revealed that, when making The Empire Strikes Back, Boba Fett was intended to be the main villain for the film’s sequel, Return of the Jedi.

“Boba was gonna be the main villain,” he told the website. “That was set up, why he was taking Han Solo away, why there was a thing with him in the Christmas special.

Lucas eventually went back on his plan to create a third trilogy, having grown tired of the series, and wanting to make “more experimental films”.

“When George decided not to make a third trilogy, he completely jettisoned that story line, which is why in the first ten minutes, Boba Fett gets bumped into and falls into the mouth of a giant monster,” Millar continued.

“So he took what was planned for the third trilogy, which was the confrontation between Luke and Darth Vader, and the battle with the Emperor, and that got squished down from three movies to one movie. And that became the plot of Jedi.”

Millar added that Lucas was at one stage intending to film 12 Star Wars films, which eventually moved down to nine. Then, as we all know, Lucas only made six. Only when Disney bought Lucasfilm did work on the sequel trilogy begin.
