Steven Spielberg is ready for the next Indiana Jones to be a woman

'We’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan'

With Indiana Jones returning once again for another adventure, many are wondering whether the adventurer will hang around for multiple movies or just the one.

Steven Spielberg, who returns to direct the upcoming adventure, has remained pretty adamant that Indiana will stay on screens, but not who will be playing the hero.

Speaking to The Sun, the filmmaker was asked whether a woman could take over the role from Harrison Ford, to which Spielberg nodded in agreement and said the character could certainly take “a different form”.

“We’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan,” he added of Indiana being a female. “And there would be nothing wrong with that.”

Following the release of Ready Player One, Spielberg has been eyeing the fifth Indiana Jones movie as his next project. George Lucas – who helped create the character – will executive produce while John Williams will, once again, be on composing duties.

Spielberg has been busily promoting his new movie Ready Player One over the last few weeks, speaking out on subjects such as the MeToo movement and whether Oscars should go to Netflix productions.

The filmmaker also recently confirmed that Colin Trevorrow will return for Jurassic World 3, having directed the first Jurassic World.
