Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown says it 'freaks' her out when adult men dress up as her character Eleven

It would be fair to say there was no shortage of revellers donning pink peter pan collar dresses and tube socks in the attempt to emulate Stranger Things' cherished character Eleven this year.

But this is not to say costumes resembling one of the Netflix show’s protagonists went down without a fight. Fans of the popular 80's sci-fi thriller reacted with outrage to the costume which was advertised online and titled the "Upside Down Honey Costume".

Fans argued the costume, which comes with a pink dress, stockings, blue jacket, and fake Waffle purse, makes a child character “sexy”. The model used to advertise the outfit also has blood dripping from her nose - something that happens to Eleven in the show.

While Millie Bobby Brown, the 13-year-old actor who plays Eleven, has not responded to the uproar itself, she did admit that seeing adult men dressed up as her character “freaks” her out.

When asked if she had seen the many Eleven-inspired Halloween costumes during an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show on Tuesday, she said: “I can’t really think about it too much because if I think about it, it freaks me out that grown men are dressing up as me, you know?”

Although, she did add: “I think it’s cool, I’m definitely grateful for it and people are really funny. I get to see all those videos and pictures.”

The actor, who has already earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, continued: “But I’m a big fan of Halloween. I would dress up all the time, but this year I think I’m just going to let everybody else dress up.”

The Halloween momentum around the series gathered last year and Brown heaped praise on those dressing up as her at the time.

"At Comic-Con, people dress up as her. It’s very rewarding in a way, and as strange as Stranger Things. People are embracing her character and trying to portray her. I think it’s nice to see what different people think of her character,” she told Interview Magazine.

She added: “I’m cool with people dressing up as Eleven for Halloween. I definitely want to open my door and give them candy.”
