Terminator: Dark Fate 'on track to lose $120m at box office' after poor opening weekend

Report comes as Linda Hamilton recalls 'explosive' confrontation with James Cameron

Terminator: Dark Fate could reportedly lose $120m after a poor performance at the box office during its opening weekend.

The film, starring Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, grossed just $49m in the US over that period and $123m worldwide, based on numbers reflected by Box Office Mojo.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this means that the action film could now be on track to lose $120m – or closer to $130m or $110m depending on how it performs in other countries.

Such a loss would put the future of the franchise into question. The Independent has contacted the film's production companies for comment.

The most recent film in the franchise was the 2015 Terminator Genisys, starring Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, and Emilia Clarke.

Dark Fate saw Hamilton reprise her role as Connor for the first time since appearing in Terminator 2: Judgement Day in 1991.

The actor told The New York Times in an interview published on Monday that she and James Cameron, who directed the first two Terminator films and wrote and co-produced Dark Fate, had an “explosive” dispute while working on the first film together.

“We didn’t particularly like or dislike each other on the first one,” Hamilton said of her collaboration with Cameron for the 1984 movie.

“I had one huge explosive moment the only time I asked to see playback – Jim was one of the first directors to pioneer it. Usually, I don’t need that, but there was this tough day I think I lost some of my confidence, and when I asked to see playback, he said, ‘We don’t have time. Move on!’ And I absolutely flipped out.”

Hamiton said she told Cameron: “If you want to see a human being onscreen, then you need to treat me like one.”
