The Birth of a Nation’s official poster pulls no punches
The film seeks to correct the KKK-glorifying 1915 film of the same name
Nate Parker’s Oscar-tipped The Birth of a Nation film has released its official poster, which focuses on America’s blood-stained history.
The stripes in the Stars and Stripes are made up of rebelling slaves, dripping in places as though made of blood.
The movie landed a record-breaking deal with Fox Searchlight last year, after receiving a standing ovation at Sundance.
Its name is a jab at 1915’s The Birth of a Nation, which glorified the KKK.
The 2016 version is a biopic of Nat Turner, who led a Virginian slave uprising in 1831.
A ‘living poster’ was also released, in which we hear Turner telling fellow slaves: “Brothers, we’ve been chosen. The Lord has spoken to me: visions of what’s to come. A rise of good against evil. The first shall be last, the last shall be first. Stand with us. Stand with us.”
The Birth of a Nation opens in cinemas on 7 October.
