The Dark Tower - Trailer 2

The Dark Tower has had a tumultuous journey to the big screen, leaving many Stephen Kings fans a tad concerned. Now, the film's confirmed running time has generated fresh worry.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) confirms that the running time of the long-awaited adaptation of King's sweeping fantasy epic is... 95 minutes.

It seems the film - directed by Nikolaj Arcel and starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey in lead roles as Gunslinger Roland Deschain and the Man in Black, respectively - will merely be an introduction to the world created by King rather than a deep dive into the series' mythology.

Fans expressed their concerns on social media.

Others are relieved that the announcement, coupled with the unexpectedly short duration of Christopher Nolan's WWII thriller Dunkirk - is the start of a new trend which sees usually-bloated blockbusters clock in at under two hours.

King himself doesn't seem too worried - he assured fans that, like the first book in the series - which boasts 224 pages - is “all killer and no filler.”

The Dark Tower is released 18 August
