‘The Godfather’ could get another sequel, say Paramount and Francis Ford Coppola

Coppola has just unveiled a new version of ‘The Godfather Part III’

Another Godfather sequel isn’t off the table.

Francis Ford Coppola, who directed all three films in the franchise, and Paramount, which distributes them, have both said the possibility remains open.

Coppola spoke to The New York Times for an article marking the upcoming release of a re-edited version of The  Godfather Part III. The new edit will be unveiled on 8 December.

While Coppola has indicated that he’s not interested in personally directing a sequel to the franchise, he told the newspaper that Paramount remains free to make one or several.

“There may well be a Godfather IV and V and VI,” the director said. “I don’t own The Godfather.”

Paramount told the publication in a statement: “While there are no imminent plans for another film in the Godfather saga, given the enduring power of its legacy it remains a possibility if the right story emerges.”

The Godfather Part III was originally released in 1990. The first Godfather film came out in 1972, and a second installment followed in 1974.

Coppola did think about making a fourth film at one point, but the project was abandoned following the 1999 death of author Mario Puzo, who wrote the 1969 novel The Godfather is based on and co-wrote all three films.
