The Grudge: Hollywood to remake Japanese horror film... again

The film was originally remade by Takashi Shimazu in 2004

A reboot of The Grudge is in the works under the guidance of director Nicolas Pesce.

Pesce makes an intriguing choice following his 2016 debut, the critically-acclaimed independent chiller The Eyes of My Mother.

Hollywood tackled The Grudge once before with a Sam Raimi-produced version directed by Takashi Shimazu, the filmmaker behind the Japanese inspiration, Ju-On (2002). It starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as a nurse in Tokyo afflicted by a curse that created uncontrollable homicide rage.

The film took $187 million (£144m) from a $10 million (£7.7m) budget spawning a sequel in 2006.

Deadline confirms that Raimi will return as producer for the reboot which is yet to have a release date confirmed.

The Grudge was one of a handful of Japanese and Thai horror films Hollywood sunk its remake claws into in the 00s alongside The Ring, Dark Water and Pulse.

One new horror film that has received a surprise perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes is Annabelle: Creation, a prequel to The Conjuring series.
