The Incredibles 2 script is 'three quarters' finished, says director Brad Bird

After a wait of more than a decade, fans of The Incredibles will be excited to hear that work on the sequel's script is "three quarters" finished.

Brad Bird, writer and director of the original 2004 movie, confirmed in April that he had begun penning a new film about the team of kickass superheroes disguised as an ordinary family.

Now, he has given an update and said that he has been fleshing out the story arc. "I'm probably three quarters through the script, first pass through the script, but we're already boarding parts of it," he told Collider.

"I've got a lot of people that worked on the first one working on it, so we're all having a good time with it."

There is no word on a release date as of yet, but Bird has promised to offer fans something a bit different to the usual superhero fare, particularly as there are far more franchises today than there were eleven years ago.

"There's a new superhero movie every two weeks. What you don't want to do is trot over the same turf in the same way everyone else is," he said.

"So we're trying to keep it focused in the area that our film was, which was a little bit more about characters and relationships and stuff like that, and see what that takes us."

The Incredibles was a box office triumph, grossing more than $630 million worldwide and winning Best Animated Feature at the Oscars in 2005.

Samuel L Jackson, John Ratzenberger, Holly Hunter and Craig T Nelson made up the first film's voice cast but it remains to be seen who will sign on for the follow-up.

Jackson previously hinted that his ice-skilled character Frozone will be returning. “Every time I run into Brad he always tells me Frozone is part of what’s going on, so I have to believe that,” he told Digital Spy in March last year.

“I guess they could be The Incredibles without Frozone, but I think Frozone would be a wonderful addition to what’s already there. I’m just looking forward to seeing what Jack-Jack turned into.”

Bird's latest original feature, Tomorrowland, was one of the biggest flops of the summer, earning just $206 million at the global box office despite a big budget of $190 million.
