Robert Kirkman - creator of The Walking Dead - has locked his sights on a new project; a remake of cult 1981 horror An American Werewolf in London.

Interestingly, Deadline reports that the project is set to be written and directed by Max Landis who is the son of John Landis - the filmmaker behind the original.

An American Werewolf in London is considered to be one of the decade's pioneering horror films largely due to the groundbreaking visuals from Rick Baker who earned the first ever Oscar for outstanding makeup.

Starring David Naughton and Griffin Dunne, it follows two Americans backpacking in the English countryside, one of whom begins to manifest into a werewolf after being attacked by a creature. Jenny Agutter also stars.

Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead fan theory is surprisingly plausible

The project is not too much of a departure for Kirkman whose TV series The Walking Dead features an impressive range of old-fashioned prosthetic thanks to executive producer Greg Nicotero who was schooled by veterans George A. Romero and Tom Savini. Aside from the AMC drama, Kirkman's other credits include a television version of his comic book Outcast.

Landis Jr's previous credits include Chronicle and Victor Frankenstein; he has also written Netflix film Bright which will see Will Smith reunite with Suicide Squad director David Ayer.

His father's other credits include The Blues Brothers and Coming to America.
