This week's US film releases: a German award contender and rediscovered Tennessee Williams

Just in time to be considered for an Oscar, Germany's The White Ribbon is seen as a strong contender to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. Classic Tennessee Williams also opens small on December 30, offering yet another option to the crowded box office filled with hits.

This critically acclaimed film from director Michael Haneke is nominated for the Golden Globe's Best Foreign Language Film and has already accumulated several wins at various award ceremonies, including Cannes. Leading up to World War I, this haunting mystery is set at a rural school in 1913 where strange behavior could indicate future incidents.

The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond
Based on a recently rediscovered original screenplay by legendary American playwright, Tennessee Williams ( Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Suddenly, Last Summer), the film is set in the 1920s in Memphis, starring Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn and Ann-Margret. Bryce Dallas Howard ( Terminator Salvation) plays a rebellious Southern socialite in a story of seductive love and family scandal. Actress Jodie Markell marks her directorial debut.
