Tom Cruise film Mena renamed to most American title ever

If you’re going to make a thriller about a drug smuggler being recruited by the DEA to fight crime, you better make sure you’re nailing that macho male demo by giving it a suitable name.

As such, Universal has decided to give Tom Cruise’s new film Mena, directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) a new one.

The picture was named after a small town in Arkansas where cocaine was smuggled using an airport, but has today been rechristened: American Made.

American Made. I can already imagine the logo shuddering across the screen in steel.

Making this even better, Cruise will be playing a protagonist named Barry Seal. It’s actually based on a true story though, following the exploits of Adler Berriman "Barry" Seal, who flew flights for the Medellín cartel before being unexpectedly recruited by the CIA in the 1980s to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history.

Universal also set a release date for American Made: 25 August.
