Utoya – 22 July exclusive trailer: Gut-wrenching dramatisation of 2011 Norway attacks

Norwegian filmmaker Erik Poppe has made the bold decision to shoot the entire film in a single take

On 22 July 2011, Norway suffered one of the darkest days of its recent history.

The first attack was a car bomb explosion near Oslo's government buildings. The explosion killed eight people and injured at least 209. The second attack occurred less than two hours later. A gunman entered a summer camp on the island of Utøya and opened fire, killing 69 people and injuring at least 110. Anders Behring Breivik was arrested on the island, charged, and convicted of the attacks.

The story of that day has now been told on film in Utøya – July 22, directed by Norwegian filmmaker Erik Poppe, who took the bold decision to shoot the film in a single take in real time. The characters themselves are fictional, although the film was created with the close cooperation of survivors.

Although the 2011 Norway attacks are also the subject of the Paul Greengrass film 22 July, Poppe's approach chooses to focus on a single character, Kaja (Andrea Berntzen), who becomes separated from her sister and runs into the woods to find her.

The film was shown at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, arriving now to the London Film Festival, with screenings on 12 and 13 October.

Utøya – July 22 will be released in UK cinemas 26 October.
