Another month, another superhero movie starts shooting. This month it is Venom, the Tom Hardy-led Spider-Man spin-off.

To celebrate, a picture from the set has been posted online. Captioned “Day 1”, it sees the actor smiling, and possible features director Ruben Fleischer in the background. Unfortunately, very little else can be gathered from the relatively low-quality image.

Excitement for the movie remains slightly tepid. Despite Hardy’s appeal as an actor, with Venom not being associated with Spider-Man: Homecoming and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (the logistics remain unclear) Marvel fans remain wary.

Still, there’s an exciting cast attached to the project, including Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Reid Scott, while Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner have penned the script.

Venom — the first movie in Sony’s Marvel Universe — will be followed soon after by Silver & Black, which centres on the superheroes Black Cat and Silver Sable and will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. No casting has been announced.

Venom reaches cinemas 5 October 2018.
