War for the Planet of the Apes was an almost perfect blockbuster according to the critics, many of whom praised Andy Serkis’s central performance.

As with all movies this size, multiple scenes were left on the cutting room floor. One concerned a major face-off between Gabriel Chavarria’s character Preacher and the leading Ape, Caesar.

"Basically, Caesar is locked up and we could take him out at any time, and I'm telling him, 'The Colonel is my guy and you're the enemy,'" Chavarria told The Hollywood Reporter.

"I'm reminding him we're not friends, even though we recognised this humanity each other. Preacher was so conflicted because Caesar had let him live."

Chavarria said that, during one take, Serkis shed a single tear, leading to himself forgetting his lines. Fortunately, there was also a camera glitch during the scene, rendering that version unusable. The scene was likely cut because "it felt too forced, and the audience knew already how to feel about these two.”

Director Matt Reeves had previously said of Preacher that the character was intended to be undecided on whether the humans were right to destroy the Apes, meaning the audience are constantly on their toes.

War for the Planet of the Apes is currently in cinemas.
