Widows: Exclusive new clip from Steve McQueen's heart-pounding new heist thriller
When four armed robbers are killed in a failed heist attempt, it falls to their widows to finish the job
Steve McQueen may be best known for his uncompromising social-realism, but the British director's latest film, Widows, tackles a more fantastical subject.
To do so, he's teamed up with one of the best writers currently working, co-writing the screenplay with Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn. The film takes its basis from the 1983 ITV series of the same name, in which, after four armed robbers are killed in a failed heist attempt, it falls to their widows to step up and finish the job.
The film boasts a prestigious cast: Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya, Jacki Weaver, Carrie Coon, Robert Duvall, and Liam Neeson.
Widows had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, arriving to acclaim reviews from critics, who praised its ability to lace genre thrills with deeper, more socially-conscious themes.
It now crosses the ocean for its first UK screening at the BFI London Film Festival on 10 October, before its wider release in cinemas 6 November.
