You Were Never Really Here trailer: Joaquin Phoenix's new film looks like an artful version of Taken
It got a seven-minute standing ovation at Cannes
The first trailer for You Were Never Really Here has been released, the new film from We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay which stars Joaquin Phoenix, has a score from Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and was adapted from a Jonathan Ames novella of the same name.
The thriller went down very well at Cannes Film Festival in May, receiving a seven-minute standing ovation and won Ramsay and Phoenix awards for Best Screenplay and Best Actor respectively. It was even tipped for the Palme d'Or by some critics, though this top prize ultimately went to Swedish film The Square.
The synopsis for You Were Never Really Here is as follows:
'A missing teenage girl. A brutal and tormented enforcer on a rescue mission. Corrupt power and vengeance unleash a storm of violence that may lead to his awakening.'
It all looks quite 'arthouse Taken' in the trailer, seeing Phoenix's character stalking the men who have apparently kidnapped Nina, the fixer being known for his brutality and his weapon of choice apparently being a hammer.
Amazon Studios acquired distribution rights to the Film4, BFI and Why Not collaboration, with a release date to be announced soon.
