Robert Zemeckis's motion-capture cartoon is a perfect pairing of kaleidoscopic story and cutting-edge visuals.
It has its child-friendly delights – including several swooping flights over a snow-dusted Victorian London – but first and foremost it's a gothic ghost-train ride, with a throng of spine-tingling spectres, and a Scrooge (Jim Carrey) who's a genuinely nasty piece of work. Very young viewers should stick to the Muppets' version.
