All due credit to Nick Hornby for fleshing out Lynn Barber's short,
offhand memoir into a feature-length film, but this piquant 1960s comedy drama about a sixth former's affair with a shady older man isn't quite as earth-shattering as its award-laden international success might lead you to believe.
Still, Rosamund Pike is a comic revelation, and Carey Mulligan is certainly convincing as a star of the future, if not quite convincing as a teenage schoolgirl.
