Julian Fellowes's prettier version of Upstairs, Downstairs, above, irritates in a gazillion ways, notably with its absurd script and dunderheaded plotlines.
But the acting, from Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and Maggie Smith's toffs, and Jim Carter and Joanne Froggatt's lower orders, is top drawer. Shirley MacLaine is thrown in here for some camp sniping with the Dowager Countess of Grantham.
