A convoy of civilians, most likely Jewish, are fleeing Paris when they come under attack from a Messerschmitt.
A five-year-old girl, Paulette (Brigitte Fossey), witnesses her parents die, shot in the back. The orphan is discovered by Michael (Georges Poujouly), a kind 11-year-old peasant farmer's son and the young pair bond, creating their own secret world. The two young actors are astonishing in Réne Clément's exquisitely constructed gem from 1952.
