A bold, atypical thriller from Ealing, scripted by the theatre critic Kenneth Tynan and starring Maggie Smith in her first film role.
This poignant noir, wordless for the first 10 minutes, centres on George Nader's conman who inveigles himself into Bessie Love's life in order to pilfer her late husband's rare coin collection. Released in 1958 (just before Ealing went belly up), it benefits from Dizzy Reece's jazz score and Nader's nuanced performance.
