Its underwater animation has since been bettered by Finding Nemo, but Disney's 1989 adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's mordant fairytale remains charming. Ariel, a headstrong teenage mermaid, longs to see the world above, particularly after rescuing a dashing prince from drowning. To get her wish, she makes a devilish pact with sea witch Ursula. This energetic cartoon famously relaunched Disney's fortunes: it's a beautifully paced adventure.
