"You work like a horse but you never seem to get anywhere," maintains Amy's son in this heart-breaking slice of kitchen sink from 1959.

J Lee Thompson's drama has been overshadowed by Look Back in Anger and Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, but the acting here is just as potent, particularly from Yvonne Mitchell as Amy, the anxious, depressed mother (who cranks the radio up too loud, and spends all day at home in her dressing gown) whose weary husband (Anthony Quayle, convincing) wants to leave her for his lover (Sylvia Sims). No baddies here, just desperation.
