When the son of Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz thumps the son of Jodie Foster and John C Reilly, the grown-ups decide to meet up in a chic Brooklyn apartment to discuss the matter in a civilised fashion.

Roman Polanski's film of Yasmina Reza's hit play starts as an exquisite comedy of manners, with surgically precise performances and dialogue, but it deteriorates into a silly, implausible farce in its second half.
