This re-telling of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter is a triumph thanks largely to its lead, Emma Stone.

She plays Olive, a demure student who goes unnoticed until she lies about losing her virginity. Cue the gossip grapevine and a reputation that draws unlikely admirers. The result blends Mean Girls' spite with Juno's verbal virtuosity for the best high-school literary trip since Clueless.
