"You need to put up some curtains," Will Ferrell's sozzled Nick says to his new, kindly neighbour, Samantha (Rebecca Hall). "So you don't have to look at your future," he adds.
Her "future" in question being witnessing a shabby middle-aged, unemployed drunk camped out on his front lawn surrounded by his tatty, treasured possessions. Ferrell is refreshingly restrained as the broken man who's been fired from his sales job and dumped by his wife.
He takes to booze (lots of it; he even sups it in the shower) and his easy chair, until, that is, he befriends a lonely boy and connects with an old school pal (Laura Dern). A sweet, low-key gem. And a very modern tale.
