“The countryside has become so isolated,” claims one of the creeps in The Ice House, and the English countryside appears to be a rather terrifying place to be in these six bewitching BBC short films from the mid-1970s.
The pick of which is The Signalman, adapted by Andrew Davies from a Charles Dickens short story, in which the eponymous railway employee (played by a suitably twitchy Denholm Elliott) is spooked by dreadful premonitions. Their influence on The League of Gentlemen seems obvious.
