DVD: Helen, Retail & Rental, (New Wave)
Joy, 18, has gone missing. Her classmate Helen is asked to retread her steps for a reconstruction. In doing so, she finds a new life for herself, outside of her care home.
The plot is bare, the dialogue clinically so – underlining the solipsism that has forced itself on our misfit heroine. The music dislocates and engages at the same time, and the film is shot beautifully by first-timers Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor. And in Annie Townsend, who plays Helen, they have unearthed a star.
