Marcel Carné's ravishing 1945 melodrama, set on Paris' Boulevard du Crime in the 19th century, is all the more remarkable for being made under Nazi occupation.
It centres on Garance (Arletty), a carnival performer who has captivated four men: an actor, a mime artist (a memorable Jean-Louis Barrault), a cerebral thief and an aristocrat.
