Designed as a star vehicle for Amanda Seyfried, Letters to Juliet seems intent on matching her blandness at every turn.
Seyfried plays Sophie, an aspiring journalist on a pre-wedding honeymoon in Verona with her fiancé Victor (Gael Garcia Bernal), a chef. There, she resolves to help Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) reunite with her Italian lover, while dragging along her grandson Charlie (Chris Egan). A series of predictable events follow in which the only intriguing aspects are the accents: Garcia Bernal's lilt is like a mad Christopher Walken's, while Australian Egan fails to embody the foppish charm of a young Hugh Grant. So banalit borders on the offensive.
