Richard Linklater's breezy backstage farce is set in 1937, when a 17-year-old schoolboy (Zac Efron) talks his way into a spear-carrying role in Orson Welles' Broadway production of Julius Caesar.

The boy may not be very interesting (except to High School Musical fans), but the young Welles is an electrifying character: already a devilish charmer who cuts people from his life as cavalierly as he cuts lines from a Shakespeare play. In his first film role, Christian McKay does a sparkling impersonation.
