One Day has one of the most powerful arguments yet for not cycling in London; Boris Johnson would hate it.

Bambi-eyed Anne Hathaway is Emma, a smart Yorkshire lass who is smitten with Jim Sturgess's Dex, an arrogant but charming toff in Lone Scherfig's slushy and beautiful-looking adaptation of David Nicholls's bestseller. Em and Dex meet as students, and have a one-night stand before deciding to be pals and meeting up every year. He becomes a yoof-TV presenter; she serves tacos, then teaches, then becomes a novelist. Dex marries; Em dates a gag-free comedian. It's mawkish, moving and the central pairing – despite Hathaway's dodgy accent – are lovely together.
