The British photojournalist Tim Hetherington and the US reporter Sebastian Junger excel themselves in this frank portrayal of life on the ground in the US war on terror.

Charting a year in the company of the army's Second Platoon in one of the most feared valleys in Afghanistan, Restrepo takes its name from a soldier killed early on in the documentary, who becomes the inspiration for a new outpost. Everything from meetings with local elders to firefights in the scrubby territory is dealt with in the same unwavering style, and cut with interviews with the troops about their experiences filmed after their tour was completed. It's hard not to be moved.
