Martin Scorsese has great fun with this OTT gothic thriller, set in the trench-coated 1950s, in which an unstable detective (Leonardo DeCaprio) investigates a disappearance from an offshore mental hospital.

Few other directors could tell the story in such high style, but ultimately the story itself is a bit silly. It hinges on a climactic twist which is obvious if you keep your eyes open, which doesn't make much sense, and which serves only to undermine the excitement that's gone beforehand.
