This shoddy melodrama draws tenuous parallels between two women in 19th-century China, and two more in present-day Hong Kong.
Hugh Jackman makes a bizarre cameo halfway through, presumably because he's a friend of the film's producer, one Wendi Deng Murdoch. With its faltering acting, risible dialogue, choppy structure and eye-straining lighting, it's a career low for its director, Wayne (The Joy Luck Club) Wang.
