A reassuring tale of friendship and determination overcoming every obstacle, The King's Speech was the safe, conventional choice for Oscar voters.
But there's no doubt that it's a delightful film, with the rich characterisation and the long scenes of odd-couple verbal sparring that you'd expect from a first-rate stage play. Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush and the under-rated Guy Pearce are all terrific.
