Sometimes French film noir is best left alone, as exemplified here: a remake based on the José Giovanni novel and originally interpreted in 1966 by Jean-Pierre Melville.
The gangster/cop drama is ambiguously based in the 50s and fails to conjure the magic of the original despite its big-name French cast. One of the few highlights includes peroxide Monica Bellucci clad in leather, as girlfriend of fresh-out-of-jail gangster Daniel Auteuil. The plot is undeveloped, the dialogue fails to engage and the over saturated colour is distracting and, frankly, a bit naff.
