Steven Spielberg's sentimental film of Michael Morpurgo's novel wasn't anywhere near as acclaimed as the National Theatre stage production, and it's easy to see why.
The episodic saga of a Devon farm horse which is passed from owner to owner during the First World War, it never persuades us to care about any of the many characters, two-legged or four-legged. Still, it's effective as a child's introduction to the horrors of war.
