A Texan schoolgirl (Ellen Page) finds fulfilment by taking up the underground, all-female sport of roller derby, without telling her strict mother (Marcia Gay Harden).
Whip It is Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, and the entire film radiates her sunny positivity.
The only snag is that, in the glare of all that positivity, the drama evaporates. Page joins her roller-derby team with no effort whatsoever, and her team-mates are far too wholesome to justify much parental disapproval.
