Film review: Ron Howard's James Hunt biopic Rush

What is it? Ron Howard brings to life a bitter rivalry within the world of 1970s Formula 1 racing. Chris Hemsworth is the brilliant, blond British playboy James Hunt, taking on the coolly analytical, technically astute Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl).

The Independent says: “Rush makes rousing viewing, even if the adrenalin thrill of the race sequences themselves can’t always disguise the cliché-ridden aspects of [Peter] Morgan’s screenplay.”

They say: The Mirror: “The fact that in real life Lauda had a terrible on-track accident is dealt with early, so while there is no sense of suspense there is plenty of space to relish the thrills and spills of Formula 1 in an era when it brimmed with powerful characters.” Den of Geek: ”It’s difficult to say whether the human story alone is enough to appeal to those who aren’t at least passing fans of F1, but whenever it gets behind the wheel it has a serious claim to being the best motor-sport movie yet.”
