Freedomland is based on a novel by Richard Price, another of whose books, Clockers, became a Spike Lee film. It has the hallmarks of a hard-hitting, politically-charged drama. But most viewers will have guessed whodunnit well within an hour, and for the rest of the film the actors take it in turns to deliver long monologues which do nothing except prove how intensely emotional they can be.
